Welcome to Hajdúnánás!

 Dr. Éles András

Today, yesterday, tomorrow - expressions used to describe the passing of time. Our town with its population of around 20,000, is committed to preserving its rich economic heritage, making the most of its dynamic present, and planning for a secure future.

Today, Hajdúnánás is probably best known as one of the historical Hajdús settlements, which means that it officially dates back to 12 December 1605, when it was awarded special status by Count István Bocskai. However, this is misleading, since the settlement has been inhabited for far longer, from at least as early as the 12th-13th centuries. The Regestrum of Várad contains the first written mention of Nánás, which is later also referred to in historical records as Nánásmonostora, which clearly points to the fact that it also had a church. But there is no disputing that Hajdúnánás was officially granted town status in 1605, which it proudly bears to this very day.

This website is not only intended to describe the history of our town, but also to provide some extra information to those who would like to get to know us a little better.

Here are a few little known but nevertheless important statistics related to the town: the length of the electricity supply network is 112.8 km, some 90% of the approximately 100 km of streets are metalled, 85 km of pipes supply the town with fresh water and 65% of the population have gas heating. All households have access to communal refuse collection services.

We hope that government initiatives to develop the eastern region of the country, and the EU subsidies provided for this purpose, will help to boost economic activity in our town.

The forthcoming completion of the latest section of the M3 motorway will connect Hajdúnánás directly to the country's primary transportation network.

However, the prosperity of a town does not depend solely on the policies of the central government. The local people also play an active part in shaping their future, by seeking like-minded partners. There can be few towns that regard the neighbouring settlement not as a rival but as a partner, with a shared philosophy and interests. It is in this spirit that we approach any investors who wish to contribute to the shaping of our future. One of the pre-conditions for the business success is already in place: a dedicated, highly skilled and motivated local workforce. Unfortunately, as in many areas of the country, unemployment is high in this region. Consequently, the local council aims to create an economic environment that is as favourable as possible to investors.

Besides preserving its historical, architectural and cultural heritage, another of the town's key objectives is to develop its tourism industry.

I believe it is in the town's best interests to create as pleasant environment as possible for tourists to enjoy our excellent thermal waters, which are suitable for treating diseases of the motor organs, and to ensure Hungary's status as a recognised tourist centre both locally and internationally. Our international relations are further strengthened by the fact that we have been twinned with the Polish town of Ustron, since 1993, and have also formed partnerships with Piestany in Slovakia and Valea Lui Mihai in Romania.

Thanks in part to these cross-border relationships, not only do a great many Hungarian and West European (especially German and Dutch) tourists visit Hajdúnánás every year, but many hundred Poles and Slovakians also choose to spend their holidays here.

I hope you enjoy our website, and we hope to see you soon!

                        Sincerely,
